What the message is telling you
Read down until a phrase matches what you got. The order is roughly most common to least common.
| Words in the message | What it actually means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| already used · already claimed · already redeemed | The code is alive. This account has spent it. | Nothing is broken — you are on the wrong account. Sign in to the account you actually play on. One trap worth knowing: the same code can also come back as a success and then arrive as an in-game mail telling you that you already claimed it. So check your Mail before you conclude the code is dead. |
| invalid · does not exist · incorrect | The string you submitted is not a code at all. | There are only two realistic causes and both are in the string. Codes are case-sensitive, and a leading or trailing space is enough to break one — this is common when you copy out of a chat app or a comment. Paste into an empty field rather than over text that is already there. |
| expired · no longer valid | The claim window has closed. This one is genuine. | Check the code against a list that dates its rows. Livestream codes are the shortest-lived of all and are usually measured in days, so if you are reading a code from a version preview stream and it is more than a few days old, this is the likely answer. |
| not valid for this server · wrong server · server | Either you picked the wrong server, or the code is locked to one. | First check the dropdown. Then check the character nickname the page previews — if that is not your character, you are on the wrong server or the wrong account. If both look right and it still fails, the code is server-locked. See the three examples further down. |
| Adventure Rank · AR | The rank gate. | Almost every code needs Adventure Rank 10. Two historic exceptions existed — GENSHINGIFT and the codes from the old Prime Gaming offer — which could be redeemed from Adventure Rank 1, but even those still needed Adventure Rank 2 before the reward could be collected from the in-game mailbox. |
| character nickname · nickname · role name | The nickname did not match the character. | It has to match exactly, including capitalisation and any non-Latin characters. Copy it out of the game rather than retyping it, and remember that nicknames are not unique — the page is matching yours against the account you signed in with, not looking it up. |
| too many · try again later · rate | You have been rate-limited, not rejected. | Stop and wait. Repeating the attempt extends the window, which is why the same code can fail ten times in a row and then work after a pause. If you are testing several codes, space them out. |
| Nothing — it said successful | The page accepted it but the reward is not in your inventory. | Rewards are delivered by in-game mail, not straight into your inventory, and the mail is not permanent — it defaults to 30 days. Open Mail and claim it. If Mail says you already claimed it, the code was spent on this account at some earlier point. |
The 60-second test: dead code, or your account?
Most people respond to a failed code by hunting for a different code. That is the wrong move, because it does not tell you which of the two problems you have. Do these three checks instead, in order. They take under a minute and they separate the two cases cleanly.
- Read the verb, not the noun. If the message says the code has been used, the code is fine and your account has history with it. If it says invalid, the string is wrong. Those two point in opposite directions and they are never the same problem.
- Fail a second code from the same batch. If two codes from the same release fail in exactly the same way, it is almost never the codes — it is your account, your server selection, or the rank gate. One code failing is ambiguous. Two failing identically is a pattern.
- Look at the nickname the page previews. The redemption page shows the character it is about to credit. If that is not your character, stop troubleshooting the code — you are signed in to the wrong account, or you have the wrong server selected, and no code will ever work from there.
The result you are looking for: either the code is dead, or your setup is wrong. If the three checks above all come back clean and the code still fails, treat the code as dead and move on rather than retrying it.
Why “still listed” does not mean “still works”
A code can be listed as active on a page that was correct when it was written and wrong by the time you read it. Two things cause that, and neither is carelessness on the part of the list:
- “Indefinite” does not mean infinite. A code with no published end date can still stop working when it hits its maximum usage limit, or when HoYoverse decides to revoke it. There is no notice when that happens.
- The lists do not agree with each other. We compared two of the pages that rank for this search on 23 Sep 2026: one listed 6 active codes, the other listed 10. When two lists disagree about whether a code is alive, treat the code as unconfirmed until you have tried it yourself.
That is the reason the list on our main codes page dates every row and names the sources behind it. A code with a date next to it tells you how old the claim is. A code without one tells you nothing.
The codes used as examples above
| Code | Server | Listed since | Why it is here |
|---|---|---|---|
| GS71XAVWDS | America / Europe / Asia / TW-HK-Macao | Server-locked. Live code, refuses China-server accounts. | |
| GENSHINGIFT | All | Long-running, no end date | Rank-1 exception, and the code most often reported broken for account-history reasons. |
| YuanShen | China only | The reverse case: never works on a global account. | |
| BALLETCOLLAB | America / Europe / Asia / TW-HK-Macao | A collaboration code. These have no expiry published and are often reposted long after they close. | |
| 2BJ64QRZ7RT8 | America / Europe / Asia / TW-HK-Macao | Still listed two months on. A good test case for the “indefinite is not infinite” rule. |
“Listed since” is the earliest date a source we checked published the code, not the date it was issued and not a guarantee that it still works. Nothing on this page was tested by redeeming it ourselves.
Where these answers come from
- The official redemption page at genshin.hoyoverse.com/gift — the rank gate, the server dropdown, and the nickname field are all visible there, and the server restriction on a code shows up in practice rather than in documentation.
- The community wiki entry for promotional codes — the source of the two failure behaviours that are hard to discover on your own: that an already-claimed code can still report success and then fail in the mailbox, and that whitespace around a code invalidates it. It is also where the Adventure Rank 1 exceptions are recorded, and where “indefinite” is explicitly noted as not meaning infinite.
- Two of the code lists ranking for this search, re-opened 23 Sep 2026, used only to establish which codes are currently listed and how far the lists disagree with each other.
We did not copy text from any of them. Where a fact came from one of them, it is named here. Where the answer is our own — the 60-second test, and the grouping of failures by the words in the message — that is marked as ours by being written that way and by not appearing in the sources above.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my Genshin Impact code not working?
Match the words in the error first. “Already used” means the code is fine and your account has spent it. “Invalid” means the string is wrong, usually a typo or a stray space. “Expired” is genuine. “Not valid for this server” means a server mismatch. If the page reported success and nothing arrived, look in your in-game Mail before assuming anything failed.
How do I tell whether the code is dead or my account is the problem?
Fail a second code from the same batch. If two codes from the same release fail identically, the problem is your account, your server selection, or the rank gate, not the codes. Then check the character nickname the redemption page previews — if it is not your character, you are on the wrong account and no code will work from there.
Can a Genshin code say it worked and still give me nothing?
Yes, and it happens in two ways. The reward is delivered by in-game mail rather than straight into your inventory, so it is not visible until you open Mail. And if the account already claimed that code, the page can still accept it and then send a mail telling you it was already claimed.
Why does a code work for other people but not for me?
Three reasons cover almost all of it: the code is server-locked to a server your account is not on, your Adventure Rank is below 10, or your account already claimed it. The GS71 batch is server-locked. YuanShen is China-server only. GENSHINGIFT is the one people most often fail because of account history.
What Adventure Rank do I need for Genshin codes?
Adventure Rank 10 for almost every code. The historic exceptions were GENSHINGIFT and the codes from the old Prime Gaming offer, which could be redeemed from Adventure Rank 1 — but even those needed Adventure Rank 2 before the reward could be collected from the in-game mailbox.
Why does the same code fail every time I retry it?
If the message mentions trying again later, you are rate-limited and retrying extends the window. If the message says the code is invalid, the string is wrong and retrying the same string will keep failing. If it says the code was already used, retrying cannot help at all — that is account history.
Does “indefinite” mean a Genshin code lasts forever?
No. A code with no published end date can still stop working when it hits its maximum usage limit, or when HoYoverse revokes it. There is no advance notice, which is why a code being listed on a popular page is not evidence that it still works.
Why do different code lists show different active codes?
Because they check on different days and they disagree about what counts as active. On 23 Sep 2026 the two lists we compared showed 6 and 10 active codes. When two lists disagree about a specific code, treat it as unconfirmed until you have tried it yourself.
